How s your English pronunciation? I doubt you can read this poem without making mistakes! See me try (Make sure to stick around until the end for an encouraging message after the poem!) More about the poem is described in detail here www fluentin3months com tough In this video I try to read a famous poem [Not actually originally called "English is tough stuff", it s a slightly modified (updated) version of "The Chaos" written by Gerard Nolst Trenité in 1922], which demonstrates the weird spelling convention English has To make it more fun though, I added in not only the original poem, but also the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) indications AND lots of fun images! Note that I am IRISH, and as such what I say does not correspond perfectly with the AMERICAN IPA that I got from an online converter (and corrected for words it didn t know) So there are several words that I say different to the IPA Most of the time this is my accent, but if I pronounce a word just wrong, let me know in the comments and I ll list it here to be sure people don t learn my bad pronunciation! I m pretty sure I got the vast majority of it right! Mistakes * "lichen" should have been pronounced laɪkɪn * "Arkansas" is usually pronounced with an "aw" ending, but I said "r" to make the poem rhyme If you enjoyed this video, don t forget to subscribe and to share it with your friends! Take the weather for example, to make a perfect weather prediction we would have to have highly accurate measurements of every contributing variable over every single square inch of atmosphere we are looking at So you can imagine, any tiny change of the input could mean a huge variation in the output, and while the system is still deterministic in that the variables do behave the way we expect them to, it is still very unpredictable and subject to variation making it chaos…but with rules, a k a deterministic chaos Deterministic chaos—you may have also heard of it as chaos theory or the butterfly effect And, of course, weather is actually how chaos theory was first discovered by Edward Lorenz, a meteorologist at MIT, and his team in the 1960s Learn more about chaos theory, supercomputers, and deterministic systems on this episode of Elements #ChaosTheory #Supercomputer #ButterflyEffect #Seeker #Elements #Science Is the Butterfly Effect Real? s youtu be Hp8wGQW-Y48 Read More Chaos and the Double Pendulum s gereshes com 2018 11 19 chaos-and-the-double-pendulum "Chaotic dynamics, in a nutshell, means that a system is extremely sensitive to initial conditions That means a small change in where the system begins, becomes a big difference in where it ends up A lot of people say that chaos means that we cant predict what the system will do, and this is not exactly true Chaotic systems, including the one we are looking at today, can be deterministic " Uncertainty in weather and climate prediction s www ncbi nlm nih gov pmc articles PMC3270390 "Early implementation of probabilistic methods for numerical weather prediction was based on applying small, random perturbations to the atmospheric state variables (temperature, humidity, winds and pressure) in the analysed initial condition " When the Butterfly Effect Took Flight s www technologyreview com s 422809 when-the-butterfly-effect-took-flight "Lorenz was repeating a simulation he’d run earlier—but he had rounded off one variable from 506127 to 506 To his surprise, that tiny alteration drastically transformed the whole pattern his program produced, over two months of simulated weather " Thanks to Think Twice for his amazing visualizations, go check out his channel for more s www youtube com channel UC9yt3wz-6j19RwD5m5f6HSg ____________________ Elements is more than just a science show It’s your science-loving best friend, tasked with keeping you updated and interested on all the compelling, innovative and groundbreaking science happening all around us Join our passionate hosts as they help break down and present fascinating science, from quarks to quantum theory and beyond Seeker explains every aspect of our world through a lens of science, inspiring a new generation of curious minds who want to know how today’s discoveries in science, math, engineering and technology are impacting our lives, and shaping our future Our stories parse meaning from the noise in a world of rapidly changing information Visit the Seeker website s www seeker com videos Elements on Facebook s www facebook com SeekerElements Subscribe now! www youtube com sub ion_center?add_user dnewschannel Seeker on Twitter twitter com seeker Seeker on Facebook s www facebook com SeekerMedia Seeker www seeker
